HSTS Taekwon-Do Cadets: Building Strong Character Through Moral Culture
Teaching Confidence, Respect and Discipline Through Traditional Taekwon-Do
At HSTS Taekwon-Do, our Cadets programme is about far more than learning how to kick, punch, or perform patterns. It’s about developing strong character, positive values, and confident young people who carry these lessons into their everyday lives.
Last week, our HSTS Cadets took time to explore the moral culture of Taekwon-Do, diving deeper into what it truly means to be a martial artist. While physical training is an important part of Taekwon-Do, the heart of the art lies in its values, discipline, and mindset.
Taekwon-Do: More Than a Martial Art
Taekwon-Do is a traditional Korean martial art built on physical skill, mental strength, and moral development. At HSTS, we are passionate about teaching children that Taekwon-Do isn’t just something you do in the dojang — it’s something you live by at school, at home, and in the wider community.
Our Cadets sessions are carefully structured to help children:
Build confidence and self-belief
Learn respect and discipline
Develop resilience and perseverance
Improve focus and emotional control
Make positive decisions in everyday life
Understanding the Tenets of Taekwon-Do
A key focus of our recent Cadets training was learning and discussing the Five Tenets of Taekwon-Do. These principles guide everything we teach at HSTS and form the foundation of strong moral character.
1. Courtesy (Ye Ui)
Courtesy teaches cadets to show respect to instructors, fellow students, parents, and teachers. In class, this means listening carefully, supporting teammates, and behaving politely. Outside the dojang, courtesy helps children build healthy relationships and good manners.
2. Integrity (Yom Chi)
Integrity is about doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Our cadets learn the importance of honesty, accountability, and taking responsibility for their actions — values that are essential both in Taekwon-Do and in everyday life.
3. Perseverance (In Nae)
Progress in Taekwon-Do doesn’t happen overnight. Cadets learn that improvement comes from consistent effort and determination, especially when things feel challenging. This mindset helps children develop resilience in school, sports, and personal goals.
4. Self-Control (Guk Gi)
Self-control teaches cadets how to manage their emotions, actions, and reactions. Through structured training, children learn to stay calm under pressure, follow instructions, and make thoughtful choices — an invaluable life skill.
5. Indomitable Spirit (Baekjul Boolgool)
Indomitable spirit is about never giving up, standing strong in the face of adversity, and having the courage to do what is right. This tenet helps children build confidence, bravery, and a positive attitude toward challenges.
Learning Through Discussion, Teamwork and Practice
At HSTS Taekwon-Do Stevenage, moral culture isn’t just talked about — it’s actively practised. Our Cadets explore the tenets through:
Group discussions and real-life examples
Teamwork and partner activities
Positive reinforcement and leadership opportunities
Applying values during training and sparring
This approach helps children truly understand how Taekwon-Do shapes behaviour, mindset, and decision-making, both inside and outside the class.
Developing Future Leaders Through Taekwon-Do
We are incredibly proud of how our cadets are embracing these values. Many parents tell us they see improvements not only in physical fitness, but also in:
Confidence at school
Respectful behaviour at home
Focus and self-discipline
Willingness to help others
Our goal is to help every cadet grow into a confident, respectful, and responsible young leader — someone who represents Taekwon-Do with pride in their school, family, and community.
