The Hitchin Taekwon-Do Club was established in 1987, making it the oldest ITF Taekwon-Do club in Hitchin/Hertfordshire. In 1990 Master Horan (VIII degree) took the club over with just 6 students attending. We now have clubs in Hitchin, Stevenage and Barton-Le-Clay. These clubs now form HSTS Taekwon-Do, with over 500 students and over 34 different classes running throughout the week. We take pride in having a high instructor-to-student ratio, with 9 BTC registered Instructors and dedicated age-related classes to be able to cater for ages 4 to 60+. You can find the instructors listed HERE. We have dedicated children’s classes for 4-7/8yrs and 8/9-12yrs, as well as 13yrs/adults’ classes. This enables us to run age-specific classes while keeping the discipline found within Martial arts.
The clubs are members of the UTA (Unified Taekwon-Do Association), UKITF, ITF (
Master Horan, the chief instructor, has attended many of the late Gen.Choi Hong Hi (the founder of Taekwon-Do) seminars and instructors courses, and more recently Grandmaster Choi Jung Hwa 9th Dan (Gen.Choi Hong Hi’s son) to enable him to teach the true techniques without distortion. He has a dedicated instructor’s team that consists of fully qualified and recognised BTC registered instructors who are as committed as he is to teaching anyone who wants to learn.
Since 2004 he has regularly trained under his instructor Grandmaster Trevor Nicholls 9th Dan and has assisted him with many seminars throughout the world which certainly gives authority in what is taught at HSTS Taekwon-Do.
Master Horan and his team of instructors are dedicated to teaching Taekwon-Do to anyone who wishes to learn and believe that Taekwon-Do is for anyone and everyone. So, whether you are fit, unfit, young, or older, you can learn this exciting form of self-defence.
All our instructors have an enhanced DBS check and are registered with the British Taekwon-Do Council which is recognised by the Sports Council. They have attended an instructor course and had a practical assessment before being certified. Please check out the BTC safeguarding policy.
HSTS has also obtained a safeguarding code in martial arts accreditation. This is a government accreditation through the BTC which means we have in place all safeguarding and teaching practices for Taekwon-Do in a safe environment for all ages.
Taekwon-Do is much more than just self-defence. It can be life-changing for some. If you choose to join the club you will get 100% commitment from all of us here at HSTS.
