Why Start Taekwon-Do as an Adult?

Many adults like the idea of learning a martial art but put off starting because they think they are too old, too unfit or don’t have enough flexibility.

That’s exactly why beginner training exists.

At HSTS Taekwon-Do, we don’t expect you to arrive fit, flexible or experienced. Training is designed to help you develop these qualities gradually and at your own pace.

Our adult classes attract people for many different reasons. Some want to improve their fitness. Others are interested in self-defence. Some want to lose weight, become more active or regain fitness after years away from exercise.

Others simply want something different.

Whatever your reason, you don’t have to get fit to start Taekwon-Do – you start Taekwon-Do to help you get fitter.

Bored of the Gym? Try Something Different

Traditional exercise isn’t for everyone.

If you’ve joined gyms in the past but struggled to stay motivated, martial arts training can provide something very different. Rather than simply repeating the same workout, every Taekwon-Do lesson gives you something new to learn and improve.

As your fitness develops, so does your Taekwon-Do.

You’ll work on fundamental movements, kicking techniques, hand techniques, pad work, combinations, self-defence and many other areas of training.

There is always another technique to improve, another grade to work towards and another personal goal to achieve.

This combination of physical exercise and learning a skill is one of the reasons people continue martial arts training for many years.

Improve Your Fitness Without Realising How Hard You’re Working

Taekwon-Do provides a varied full-body workout.

Training can help develop:

  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Strength and muscular endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Core strength
  • Speed and reaction
  • Mobility

Rather than spending an entire session concentrating on one type of exercise, Taekwon-Do combines movement, technique and fitness.

Because you’re concentrating on learning and improving your techniques, training can often feel very different from a conventional workout.

And importantly, you work at your own level.

You’re not expected to keep up with somebody who has been training for years. Your aim is simply to improve from where you started.

Learn Practical Self-Defence Skills

For many adults, learning self-defence is one of the main reasons they become interested in martial arts.

Taekwon-Do teaches much more than kicking.

Students develop an understanding of distance, movement, balance, awareness and how to use both hands and feet effectively.

As your training progresses, you will learn a range of defensive skills and techniques while developing greater confidence in your own physical ability.

Good self-defence is not simply about learning how to fight. Awareness, confidence, control and avoiding unnecessary confrontation are equally important.

Build Confidence – One Lesson at a Time

One of the biggest changes martial arts training can bring isn’t always physical.

It’s confidence.

Learning something completely new can initially take you outside your comfort zone. But each time you learn a technique, complete a challenging session or achieve your next goal, that confidence begins to grow.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens lesson by lesson.

The person who walks into their first Taekwon-Do class may feel completely different after several months of regular training.

That’s one of the most rewarding aspects of martial arts.

“Am I Too Old to Start Taekwon-Do?”

This is one of the most common concerns adults have.

The simple answer is no.

You do not need to have started martial arts as a child to benefit from Taekwon-Do.

Adults begin training at many different ages and with very different levels of fitness and experience. The important thing is that you train appropriately for your ability and gradually build from there.

You aren’t competing against the person standing next to you.

Your progress is your progress.

“I’m Not Flexible Enough”

Another common misconception is that you need to be able to perform high kicks before joining Taekwon-Do.

You don’t.

Flexibility is something that can develop through training.

Nobody expects a beginner to walk through the door and immediately perform the techniques of an experienced black belt. Techniques are introduced progressively and adapted to your current ability.

Your flexibility, balance, coordination and technique can all improve with regular practice.

“I’ve Never Done Martial Arts Before”

Perfect.

Our September courses are specifically designed to give beginners a starting point.

Walking into an established martial arts class for the first time can sometimes feel intimidating, particularly if you have never trained before.

That’s why our beginner intake provides an ideal opportunity to start.

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of Taekwon-Do and begin building your knowledge from the ground up.

There is no expectation that you already know what you’re doing.

We teach you.

More Than Just Kicking and Punching

Taekwon-Do is a martial art, but the benefits of training extend far beyond physical techniques.

The traditional tenets of Taekwon-Do are:

Courtesy
Integrity
Perseverance
Self-Control
Indomitable Spirit

These principles remain an important part of our training.

For adults, Taekwon-Do can provide something increasingly difficult to find in everyday life: dedicated time away from work, phones, emails and day-to-day pressures.

For the duration of the lesson, your attention is on what you are doing.

Training.

Learning.

Improving.

For many students, that mental switch is just as valuable as the physical exercise.

Train with an Established Taekwon-Do School

HSTS Taekwon-Do has been teaching martial arts in the local area for decades, with clubs in Hitchin, Stevenage and Barton-le-Clay.

We have developed a large and experienced instructor team, allowing students to benefit from structured tuition and instructors with many years of martial arts experience.

Our aim isn’t simply to get people through the door.

We want students to enjoy their training, progress through the grades and discover what they are capable of achieving.

For some, that may mean improving fitness and enjoying a weekly activity.

For others, it may eventually mean achieving a black belt, competing, becoming an instructor or making Taekwon-Do a lifelong part of their lives.

Every black belt began in exactly the same place:

Their first lesson.
